Karakteristik Papan Partikel Dari Sorgum (Sorghum Bicolor L) Dan Serat Kulit Buah Nipah (Nypa Fruticans Wurmb) Menggunakan Perekat Asam Sitrat-Sukrosa
ABSTRACT
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L) and nipah fruit skin fiber (Nypa fruticans
Wurmb) can be used as raw materials in the manufacture of particle board because
their contain lignocellulose. The natural adhesives used were citric acid and
sucrose. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of particle board from
sorghum and palm kernel shell fiber using citric acid-sucrose adhesive and also to
determine the optimum composition of raw materials and adhesives in the
manufacture of particle board. Particle board is made by mixing raw materials and
adhesives with variations in the composition of nipah:sorghum raw materials
100:0, 25:75, 50:50 and 0:100 and variations in the concentration of citratesucrose
adhesive are 20% and 30%. The target dimensions and density of particle
board are 25 cm × 25 cm × 0,9 cm and a density of 0,8 gr.cm-3. The partic leboard
was hot-pressed for 10 minutes at 200°C. Testing of the physical and mechanical
properties of particle board refers to the JIS A 5908:2003 standard. The average
value of moisture content is 11,94%, density 0,79 gr.cm-3, water absorption
52,96%, thickness swelling 13,21%, modulus of elasticity 1029,55 N.mm-2,
modulus of rupture 6,46 N.mm-2, internal bonding 0,18 N.mm-2, and the screw
holding is 43,12 N. Variation of raw materials composition, have a significant
effect on moisture content, water absorption, thickness swelling, modulus of
elasticity and modulus of rupture. The application of 30% adhesive content has
significant effect on water absorption, thickness swelling and screw holding.
