The claim of ownership of the area around the Preah Vihear Temple
between Cambodia and Thailand is a different interpretation of the decision of the
International Court of Justice on the ownership of the Preah Vihear Temple
which has been decided to belong to Cambodia. The difference in interpretation
has caused Cambodia-Thailand to experience an ups and downs conflict situation
even though bilateral negotiations have been carried out. Seeing the Cambodia-
Thailand border conflict that has been going on for quite a long time, Indonesia,
which was elected as chairman of ASEAN, has become involved as a mediator in
managing the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. Indonesia's role in managing
the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict is carried out with the aim of maintaining
the stability of relations between ASEAN member countries.
The research methodology used in this research is descriptive research,
that is, this study attempts to provide an overview of the phenomena of the
Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. Which relates to how Indonesia's role in
managing the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict.
From the results of the study, it can be seen that Indonesia's role as a
mediator in managing the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict is to realize the
goal of establishing ASEAN which has been agreed upon by ASEAN member
countries to create peace in the Southeast Asian region. Indonesia's role is to
bring together, facilitate, and provide recommendations to Cambodia-Thailand in
order to find a solution so that Cambodia-Thailand will both prioritize the
peaceful way. At first, Indonesia's role as a mediator was accepted by Cambodia-
Thailand. Then the next attempt to bring Cambodia-Thailand was rejected by
Thailand because Thailand saw that Indonesia had not been able to persuade
Cambodia to withdraw its troops at the border. Indonesia's efforts to bring
Cambodia-Thailand together were carried out on the sidelines of the 18th ASEAN
Summit, which after the efforts to bring Cambodia-Thailand together by
Indonesia at the 18th ASEAN Summit resulted in an agreement in a bilateral
meeting between Cambodia-Thailand. In this case, the Cambodia-Thailand
border conflict will end or it will continue depending on Cambodia-Thailand.
Indonesia's role as a mediator is in accordance with ASEAN procedures in which
ASEAN's authority can only make efforts to resolve conflicts through negotiations
and cannot become a judge who has the right to decide cases.
