Analisis Semiotika Rasisme Dalam Film Night School

As one of the media that reflects American society, Hollywood films still have
many elements of racism that are poured into several film genres. One of the genres
that has a lot of interest is comedy, such as the one in the film Night School, which
was released in 2018. This film tells the story of a child who drops out of school and
then returns to school at a young age in order to get a job. This film shows a lot of
acts of racism that are deliberately used as a supporting element of comedy to invite
laughter from the audience. This study aims to determine the meaning of denotation,
connotation and myth in the film Night School.
This research uses qualitative research methods and is analyzed with the
semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. The subject in this study is the comedy genre film
Night School which has a duration of 1 hour 34 minutes and consists of 56 scenes,
then the researcher selects one by one scene that contains acts of racism. Data
analysis technique by appreciating the object of research as the first step to
understanding the film, dissecting the object of research, and combining it with
supporting data.
Based on the analysis results obtained in the film Night School, this film can
be found symbols in the form of verbal and non-verbal which can be analyzed with
semiotics about how the physical condition and race of a person are used as elements
of comedy support to support the laughter of the audience that this film puts forward.
repeatedly. Researchers found the denotative meaning of this film, namely acts of
racism committed by white people in a verbal and direct way, besides that racism
also occurs between black people who demean a person's physical form, besides that
there is also a connotative meaning, namely racism that carried out using language
as well as more subtle terms and gestures used to shape the stigma of society against
a race and the existence of racism through the accent that is intended. The myth that
researchers found in this film is about racism, namely black people are still
considered stupid, black people are troubling because they tend to commit criminal
acts, people who have short bodies are easier to intimidate, black people have a
lower social status than white people, and the issue of Islamophobia is still strong in
America.
