ABSTRACT
Mangroves are an ecosystem that exist on the coast. Unfortunately this ecosystem which has a very important role has suffered damages as a result of human disturbance. Therefore an alternative strategy is needed to ensure utilization of mangroves by humans are sustainable, including through ecotourism based management. Many factors can affect the success of mangrove ecotourism. This study examines cases of mangrove ecotourism in Kuala Alam Village and Pematang Duku Village in Bengkalis District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau. The aims of this study were: (1) evaluate the characteristics of the mangroves in as an ecotourism resources; (2) analyzing the level of suitability of mangroves in each village as an ecotourism destination; and (3) formulate a mangrove ecotourism development strategy based on the existing conditions. Data collected through direct observation and interviews in the field are used to calculate the Tourism Suitability Index (TSI), SWOT analysis, and determine the ranking of alternative strategies in the development of mangrove ecotourism. The calculation results show the mangroves in Kuala Alam Village do not have tourism suitability (IKW2) so they are feasible to develop. Based on the results of the SWOT analysis, three priority strategies for the development of mangrove ecotourism in Pematang Duku were obtained, namely: (a) determining the land status for mangrove ecotourism locations and providing land boundarie; (b) strengthening the institutional status and quality of human resources to manage ecotourism locations; and (c) initiate the construction of facilities at ecotourism locations.
