Kinetika Reaksi Transesterifikasi Minyak Sawit Off-Grade Menjadi Biodiesel Menggunakan Katalis Ba(Oh)2

Biodiesel is monoalkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oil or animal fat, and can be used as an alternative fuel for diesel engines. Off-grade palm oil is a potential feedstock for biodiesel production. The objectives of this research were to produce biodiesel from off-grade palm oil as well as to determine of parameter kinetic of transesterification reaction of off-grade palm oil using Ba(OH)2. The free fatty acid (FFA) content in off-grade palm oil is quite high that biodiesel production was followed two-step processes, i.e. esterification and transesterification.
The esterification of off-grade palm oil (500 mL) was carried out at 60 oC using for 1 hour, methanol:oil molar ratio of 12:1, stirrer speed of 400 rpm, and H2SO4 1% weight as acid catalyst. And then, it was followed by the transesterification at the operating conditions such as: methanol:oil molar ratio of 9:1, stirrer speed of 400 rpm, 2 hours of duration with variation of temperatures (50, 60 and 70 oC) and Ba(OH)2 catalysts amounts (1, 2 and 3%). During the reaction, the sample (50 mL) was taken in every 15 minutes for acid value and saponification value analysis and these data was used for calculations of reaction kinetic.
The best result for kinetic of transesterification follows the pseudo-second order reaction with reaction rate constant was 0.0015 L.mol-1.minute-1 at 60 oC using, Ba(OH)2 catalyst of 3%, and standard deviation was 0.06443. The activation energy for this reaction was 16.6363 kJ.mol-1. Based on GC-MS analysis, it found that the best result of fatty acid methyl ester was 98.97%, with major components were 40.87 % hexadecanoic acid methyl ester and 35.87 % 9-octadecenoic acid methyl ester. The characteristics of biodiesel produced were density 860.46 kg/m3, viscosity 4.08 mm/s2 and flash point 145 oC.
