ABSTRACT
Peatland as sago plantation land in Tebing Tinggi Timur District, Kepulauan Meranti Regency, is critical due to land fires, so land fire prevention is urgently needed. One of the efforts to control peatland fires is through local wisdom. This study aims to 1) determine the characteristics of sago farmers; 2) determine the role of local wisdom; 3) analyze the empowerment of sago farmers; and 4) analyze the relationship between the characteristics of sago farmers and the empowerment of farmers in tackling peatland fires. This study used the snowball sampling method and descriptive analysis tools with a Likert scale and Spearman rank correlation analysis. The results of this study describe that farmers have a productive age, a low education level, a small family of dependents, a large land area, a lack of experience, and a low cosmopolitan level. Interaction with extension workers is low, support from community leaders is very high, the role of groups is high, information and communication media use is moderate, and government support is moderate. Local knowledge plays a role, local values do not play a role, local skills play a sufficient role, local resources do not play a role, and local decision-making mechanisms do play a role. Human resources are empowered, the productive economy is empowered, and institutions are powerless. The results of Spearman's rank correlation analysis that have a relationship are education, land area, cosmopolitan, interactions with trainers or extension instructors, support from community leaders, information and communication media, and government support.
