The Effect Of Cooperative Integrated Reading And Composition (CIRC) Method In Reading Comprehension Toward The Second Year Students Of SMP Tunas Harapan Pekanbaru
The teaching methods introduced by a tearcher today still use a conventional way. Thus, the situation of the class seems not active as long as the teaching and learning process run. Supported subject like reading taught in the class brings the learning process facing a tedious situation. Many students at SMP Tunas Harapan Pekanbaru still faced problems in comprehending narrative texts. When they found long and difficult texts, they became lazy to read it. Paralel to this, it was also found that teacher did not use media; teacher did not use an interesting method which enable the students to be active; teacher did not give the contextual examples of the new vocabulary; teacher seldom punished the students who did not do the assignment; teacher did not use a variety of teaching method; even, teacher kept distance from the students. The students also were not able to identify the main idea, identify detailed information, guess the meaning of vocabulary, identify the reference, and make inference; they were not serious in learning process; they did not ask their teacher if they did not understand because they were afraid of the teacher. It is a quasy expermental research and the objective of this research is to find out the significant of the students’ reading ability for narrative text after being taught by using cooperative integrated reading and composition method. The proficiency test (Pre-test and Post-tests) was used to measure the students’ ability in reading narrative text. In this research, it was used ‘t’ test formula in finding the comparison between pre-test’s result and post-test’s result and to determine whether the hypothesis could be accepted or not and also to measure whether the instuments in treatment could improve students’ reading ability or not.
The mean of pre-test score got by the second year students was 52,8. While, the mean of post-test score was 87,1. After being calculated, the enchacement score from pre-test and post-test achieved was 34,3. In addition, the ‘t’ test formula score (-0.99) showed that the null hypothesis could be accepted since the standard of ‘t’ value was 2, 18 < ‘T’ > 3, 06. Based on the result shown, the hypothesis of the research was ‘Using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Method could improve the second year students reading ability of SMP Tunas Harapan in Pekanbaru insignificantly’.
