EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Pra-Rancangan Pabrik Metanol Dari Gasifikasi Biomassa Proses Davy-Johnson Matthey Dengan Desain Alat Utama Reaktor Sintesis Metanol (R-106)
ABSTRACT
Methanol is the simplest form of alcohol with the chemical formula CH3OH. Methanol is a colorless, volatile, flammable and poisonous liquid with a special odor. Methanol is an intermediate compound that is used as a raw material for various industries, including the acetic acid, formaldehyde, MTBE, polyvinyl, polyester and DME industries. The Davy-Johnson Matthey process technology is one of the processes for producing methanol. This technology was chosen because of its high purification and good thermal efficiency so it can reduce CO2 emissions. The Davy-Johnson Matthey process is more environmentally friendly because the process can utilize heat from the heat recovery unit to obtain hydrogen and oxygen. This process produces methanol from natural or associated gas through a reforming step or from syngas produced by gasification of coal, coke, or biomass. The Davy-Johnson Matthey process has several process stages, including the raw material preparation stage, biomass gasification stage, gas residue removal stage, steam-methane reforming stage, water-gas shift stage, water and acid gas removal stage, methanol synthesis stage, and methanol purification stage.
The methanol plant was designed with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year and was established in the Dumai Industrial Area, Sungai Sembilan District, Riau Province. The establishment of a methanol factory is adjacent to the Bulu Hala River which can be a source of water for utility systems such as process water, steam, cooling water and domestic water. The electricity requirements for this factory have been supplied from PLN which is provided by the Dumai Industrial Area, apart from that the steam obtained from the process is used for the Steam Power Plant. The methanol factory produces liquid waste which needs to be processed according to waste water quality standards in accordance with waste water disposal requirements which refer to Law 32 of 2009 article 20. The control process involves operating units which must be supervised and controlled to ensure an optimal control system by paying attention control objectives, consideration of sensor selection and selection of controlled variables, manipulated variables, and disturbance.
The designed methanol plant meets the economic feasibility of being established. Based on the results of the economic analysis made, the methanol factory has a Net Present Value (NPV) of IDR 250,204,272,148, a Return on Investment (ROI) of 18.15%, a Payback Period (PBP) of 3.8 years, and a Break Even Point (BEP) at a production capacity of 34.71%.
