Pengaruh Variasi Perlakuan Awal Organosolv Dan Temperatur Reaksi Hidrolisis Terhadap Produksi Asam Levulinat Dari Tandan Kosong Sawit
ABSTRACT
Empty fruit bunches are palm oil mill waste which are usually used as boiler fuel,
compost and also as a road hardener in palm oil plantations. Production of
levulinic acid from empty fruit bunches can be applied for textile coloring agent,
anti-freezing, inks, resins, synthetic rubber and cosmetics. Levulinic acid can be
produced by hydrolyzing cellulose compounds in hydrothermal reactor. This
research aims to obtain the optimum conditions for levulinic acid production by
varying the chemical pretreatment of biomass and the temperature of the
hydrolysis reaction. In order to reduce lignin, biomass pretreated by various
organosolv pretreatment (methanol, ethanol, and acetone) catalyzed by sulfuric
acid for 60 minutes. In the hydrolysis process, the pretreated biomass was mixed
with 200 ml 4.45% hydrolic acid with various temperatures (150 °C, 170 °C, and
190 °C) in teflon lined stainless steel autoclave for 150 minutes. The levulinic acid
obtain was analyzed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
The result showed that highest concentration levulinic acid obtained at hydrolysis
temperature 190 °C using empty fruit bunches pretreated with acetone was 19870
ppm.
