Pemanfaatan Tandan Kosong Sawit Dan Spent Bleaching Earth Sebagai Bahan Baku Pembuatan Briket Dengan Variasi Komposisi Dan Suhu Karbonisasi
ABSTRACT
The escalation of the human population and industrial activities induced the availability of energy sources to reduce. This energy crisis forced humans to save and look for alternative energy sources. The utilization of empty palm oil bunches waste was expected to be one of the solutions to overcome this energy crisis. The empty palm oil bunch waste and spent bleaching earth were employed in briquettes manufacture. This method could reduce solid waste from the crude palm oil industry that has not been optimally utilized. This study aimed to investigate the effect of raw material composition and temperature on briquette quality. The produced briquettes were made by varying empty palm oil bunch charcoal: spent bleaching earth ratio (100:0, 90:20, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 (%)) and carbonization temperature (400, 450, 500oC) from the total weight of briquettes 10 g. The fixed variable used in this experiment was carbonization temperature of 450oC for empty palm oil bunch and 470oC for spent bleaching earth, particle size 100 mesh with pressure 120 bar. Both samples were carbonized for 90 minutes and 30 minutes, respectively. The drying process was conducted at room temperature for 24 hours and then at the temperature of 105oC for an hour. The result showed that the best briquettes were obtained at the composition of empty palm oil bunch charcoal: spent bleaching earth ratio 60:40%, carbonization temperature 500oC with water content 5.09%, ash content 7.8%, volatile compound 6.0%, fixed carbon content 84.0% and calorific value 5480.095cal/gr. While the compressive strength was 12.31 kg/cm2 with density 0.69 gr/cm3. The briquettes flame test resulted in an ignition length of 75 minutes 12 seconds with a composition of empty palm oil bunch charcoal: spent bleaching earth ratio 60:40% at 500oC carbonization temperature.
