Greetings are expressions used to greet someone based on a certain context. Greetings are often used in everyday communication with the right use. The use of inappropriate greetings in communication can cause misunderstandings and even be considered impolite or harmonious. This study aims to explain the forms of kinship designations and nicknames as well as kinship greetings and non-kinship greetings. In kinship and non-kinship greetings, there were also similar greeting words in greeting, but different meanings and contexts. The uniqueness found in this study is the mention of the Selayar language, which has not been found in previous studies. This research is a qualitative type research. The data of this research are designations and greetings in the Selayar language. The subjects of this study were informants native speakers of the Selayar language who had met the criteria and direct speech communication from native speakers of the Selayar language in Kampung Bugis. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found that there are variations of names and greetings in the Selayar language. There is a pattern of greeting that distinguishes the greeting based on several greeting positions. The factors that influence the variation of greeting are position, number, age, place, and profession or position. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that greetings used in terms of greeting are not only based on politeness, but also based on habit and greetings do not make a problem with the use of these greetings.
