Background: Dysmenorrhea is defined as cramping pains in the lower
abdomen. Secondary dysmenorrhea is divided into primary dysmenorrhea
and secondary dysmenorrhea. Secondary dysmenorrhea is a menstrual
cramp caused by an underlying pathological event. Secondary
dysmenorrhea is known to influence the menstrual fluid volume, the
menstrual cycle, the body mass index, and the abdominal circumference.
Objectives: This study aimed to observe the relationship between secondary
dysmenorrhea with the menstrual fluid volume and the menstrual cycle of
undergraduate medical students.
Methods: This study was a survey analytical study with a cross-sectional
design. The population of this study was female medical students of The
University of Riau. The sample was taken by total sampling. This study used
questionnaires and then used ultrasonography (USG) imaging.
Results: This study found that most of the students have normal body mass
index. The mean body circumference was 74,58 cm in secondary
dysmenorrhea students and 78,07 cm in students without secondary
dysmenorrhea. There was a significant relationship between secondary
dysmenorrhea and menstrual cycle (P=0,013) and there was no significant
relationship between secondary dysmenorrhea and the menstrual fluid
volume (P=0,0742).
Keywords: Dysmenorrhea, Secondary Dysmenorrhea, Menstrual Fluid
Volume, Body Circumference, Body Mass Index, Ultrasonography.
