Inguinal hernia is a viscus protrusion through an opening in the wall of the cavity where the viscera is located. Hernias are very easy to find in children and often require surgery. About 96% of groin hernias are inguinal and another 4% are femoral. For this reason, inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common operations in surgical practice. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence based on the clinical characteristics of inguinal hernias in children at Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province, 2017 – 2020. This type of research was a retrospective descriptive with a cross sectional study design and a total sampling method. The results of this study indicate that the most common age of children who experience lateral inguinal hernias is the age range of 1 to 12 years with a total of 27 patients. The most gender found was in male patients with a total of 45 patients and only 2 female patients were found. The most common clinical characteristics of lateral inguinal hernias in children were reponible, with a total of 26 patients, followed by incarcerated lateral inguinal hernias with a total of 12 patients, then reponible inguinal hernias with 7 patients and the least was lateral inguinal hernia with 2 patients.
