Feminism is a social action that demands justice and equal rights with men. The issue of gender inequality is still being debated and is an interesting discussion in almost all parts of the world. Therefore, video clips are an effective mass communication tool in the process of conveying messages to the public because they are supported by pictures and sounds, as well as song lyrics adapted to social realities. This study aims to determine the representation of feminism in the video clip Best Friend by Saweetie feat. Doja Cat through John Fiske's semiotic analysis with his theory of The Codes of Television.
This study used qualitative research methods. Data collection techniques used in this research are observation (observation), documentation and literature study. The subjects of this study were 7 scenes in the video clip entitled “Best Friend” by Saweetie feat. Doja Cat version of the Official Music Video which lasts 3 minutes 22 seconds. The object of this study is audio-visual plus other data collection from journals, websites and YouTube platforms regarding John Fiske's signs that represent feminism in the Best Friend video clip. Data validity checking technique uses source triangulation.
The results of this study indicate that there are three levels according to John Fiske's semiotics, namely reality, representation and ideology. (1) the level of reality, seen in aspects of appearance, way of speaking, behavior, gestures, and environment. (2) the level of representation, feminism is depicted through the aspects of camera, lighting, music and sound. (3) at the ideological level, the depiction of the values contained in the Best Friend video clip can be interpreted as post-modern feminism which displays a female figure who creates a discourse or narrative that has the meaning of a valuable message so that women are equal, women can lead, women who dare to fight oppression, women who are able to make objections if their bodies are only used as 'objects' by men, free and independent.
