Analisis Parameter Kualitas Perairan Terhadap Kemunculan Cetacea (Lumba-Lumba) Di Kawasan Konservasi Pulau Pieh Dan Laut Sekitarnya
In the waters of West Sumatra, particularly in the Conservation Area of Pieh Island, dolphin sightings are common. Since 2015 until now, 7 species of dolphins have been identified. However, there is still a lack of information regarding the occurrence and the factors contributing to these sightings. This research aims to understand the water quality parameter conditions and their relation to dolphin sightings, as well as to observe the behavior of dolphins surfacing in the waters. The study was conducted in January 2024 in the Conservation Area of Pieh Island, Padang, West Sumatra, using a survey method by navigating around the islands in the Pieh Island area. Observations and data collection were done directly in the field (in situ) from aboard a ship. The conservation area of Pieh Island has good water quality and is suitable for the habitat characteristics of dolphins, thus attracting dolphins to migrate and forage in the vicinity. During the observation, 12 dolphin sighting points were identified, comprising 3 different species. The observed behaviors of the surfacing dolphins included travelling, breaching, feeding, bowriding, aerials, and avoiden.
