Since the introduction of Bimas and Inmas program in Indonesia around 1970, the use of pesticides by farmer is increasing. Besides the beneficial use of pesticides also brought the adverse effects, especially if the handling is not as recommended. The effects are include the risk on the environment, residues on crops and farmer risk of poisoning. The research aims to determine the socio economic level, the knowledge, perceptions and behavior of farmer on using pesticides to the environment in the Maharatu Villages, Pekanbaru City and to determine the correlation of each variable. This is a survey research through interviews and observational where data taken by cross sectional using 50 samples of population of 266 people. The data were processed and analyzed by cross tabulation followed by statistical test of Spearman Rank correlation. The results showed that farmers in Maharatu Villages, Pekanbaru City have lower socio economic level, higher level of knowledge, perceptions and behavior in the use of pesticides on the environment. The correlation test results showed that the socio economic level significantly correlated (significance level 0.01) and has higher influence on knowledge and perceptions of farmer. Socio economic level with the behavior of farmer have significantly correlated (significance level 0.05), but has lower influence. The level of knowledge significantly correlated (significance level 0.01) and has higher influence on the perception of farmer in the use of pesticides on the environment, while between knowledge and behavior of farmer in the use of pesticides on the environment significantly correlated (significance level 0.01) and higher influence. Perception of farmer of pesticides significantly correlated (significance level 0.01) and higher influence to the behavior of farmer in the use of pesticides on the environment. The behavior of farmers in the use and handling of pesticides on the environment is quite high, but in several matters are still very potential to become a problem and a source of pollution that needs to be changed. Need further supervised in the use of pesticides on the environment.
