Efektivitas Ekstrak Bawang Putih (Allium Sativum) Untuk Mencegah Serangan Bakteri Streptococcus Iniae Pada Nila Merah (Oreochromis Sp.))
A study on the effectiveness of garlic (Allium sativum) in preventing the
attact of Strep/()COCCUS inkle in Tilapia (Oreochronu"s sp.) has been conducted
from August- September 2008 in the Polonia Fish Quarantine, Medan. Garlic (A.
sativum) is recognized as an important medicinal plant which has a wide spectrum
of actions; not only antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiprotozoal, but also
has beneficial effects on immune systems. Garlic extract was obtained by juicing
fresh garlic (strain "lumbu hijau") and filter it by a filter paper. Fishes used were
tilapia (8-l 0 em in TL). In this study, fishes were injected intraperitonially by 0,1
ml bacteria culture (108
). Garlic extract, however was given by immersing the
fishes in the water that is enriched with garlic extract in certain concentrations.
Results indicated that the MIC of the garlic extract toward the Streptococcus
iniae was 31.250 ppm (30 J!l/disc). The use of garlic extract in preventing the
streptococcosis was effective as the survival rate of the treated fish was higher
than that of the control. Survival rate of the control fish was 40% and that of the
treated fish (1000, 2000 and 4000 ppm) ranged from 73,33- 93,33%. The most
effective concentration in preventing the S. iniae attact in tilapia was 2000 ppm.
