The electric power transmission system is a major part of the process in the power system, without a transmission system of electrical energy will not work properly. Therefore, the need for improvement in making a fault diagnosis in the transmission system for the electricity to consumers who are very sensitive to power outages. In this study, the measurement method is introduced for a wide area that is related to, monitoring the state of the system in a wide geographical area. The system of measuring for wide areas are used for monitoring, control, and protection by combining the functions of the phasor measurement device. The Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is a technology that makes electric power systems have synchronous measuring devices that are synchronized and updated continuously and are real-time. PMU is part of the measurement of the phasor value that gives a measurement of the current value and the voltage to the control center. Therefore, modeling was designed wide area measurement method based on PMU in the IEEE 9-bus system using Matlab/Simulink R2016a. Simulation is running normal conditions and three phases short circuit fault. The fault simulation was tested on all lines in the IEEE 9-bus system with variations in distances of 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90%. Then the simulation results will be used as input in the fault diagnosis to determine the location of the three-phase short circuit fault in the electric power transmission line on the IEEE 9-bus system. Then calculate the percent error, RMSE, and MAE from the diagnosis of three-phase short circuit fault on each line of the IEEE 9-bus system with a distance variation. The simulation results from the wide area measurement method based on PMU on each line on the IEEE 9-bus system with variations in distances of 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90%. The highest error is obtained on the lines bus-7 to bus-5 with fault location distance of 90% of bus-7 that is equal to 0.485641%, RMSE 0.0030261, and MAE 0.002462. While the smallest error on the lines bus-6 to bus-4 with a fault location distance of 10% of bus-6 is equal to 0,000628%, RMSE 0,003007, and MAE 0,002638.Keywords: fault diagnosis, PMU, short circuit, transmission line, wide area.
