Estimasi Populasi Kalong Kapauk Pteropus Vampyrus Di Pulau Besar Taman Nasional Zamrud Kabupaten Siak Provinsi Riau Berdasarkan Foto
Flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus) is the largest bat species found in the western parts of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra. The group-forming animal can be found among others in Riau Province, especially on Pulau Besar in the Zamrud National Park (TNZ). Given its ecological importance, the population of flying fox in this protected area needs to be monitored from time to time. This study aimed: (1) to explore the reliability of estimating flying fox population based on photos; and (2) to obtain estimate of current flying fox population on Pulau Besar using this method. Aerial photos were taken with the help of a drone equipped with a digital camera and a DLSR camera with a 300 mm telephoto lens. There were 979 trees on this island and crown damages were observed on 361 trees (36.9%), but only 80 of these (28.5% or 8.2% of all existing trees) were used by flying fox. The number of flying fox on 34 trees (42.5% of roosting trees) was recorded. There were a range of 65-398 individuals/tree or in average 179 individuals/tree. The estimate of current population was therefore 14,346 individuals. The accuracy of this method was influenced by factors, such as tree position, shooting angle, crown defoliation level, and density of flying fox on a tree. The flying fox on Pulau Besar sometimes migrate to other roosting sites outside the Pulau Besar and Zamrud National Park.
