Wilayah Jelajah Dan Tingkat Hunian Gajah Sumatra (Elephas Maximus Sumatranus) Di Suaka Margasatwa Balai Raja Dan Sekitarnya
Balai Raja Wildlife Reserve, is a protected area, especially to Sumatran elephant. Nowadays the remaining forest area is only 1.1%, because land conversion become oil palm plantations, rubber plantations, cassava plantations, and settlements. The high level of land conversion increase the home range of Sumatran elephant, that will be increasing the potential for conflict between elephants and humans. Purpose of this research to calculate the Sumatran elephant home range, to determine the level of Sumatran elephant occupancy and describe the public perceptions related about elephant and human conflict in Balai Raja and surrounding areas. The occupancy survey was conducted from January to February 2018, using transects 5-7 km in every plot of research is 5x5 km. This research has obtained information of coordinate signs of attendance, environmental parameters and questionnaires. Every sign of attendance was mapped with the QGIS program version 2.18. The elephants home range was calculated using the Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP). Estimated occupancy rates were analyzed using the Presence program 21.12.24. Information from questionnaire was tabulated and described to determine society perceptions about elephants, habitat and potential conflicts. Sumatran elephant home range in Balai Raja and surrounding areas is 38,380.79 ha. Estimates of occupancy rates of elephants with the best models are four covariates, namely canopy, sub-canopy, slope and height. Based on the habitat, which is suitable for elephants by 63.16%. Public perceptions of elephants and their habitat are not good so that there is an opportunity to increase the potential for conflict.
