Revitalisasi Prinsip Centrality And Unity Association Of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Oleh Indonesia Terhadap Rivalitas Amerika Serikat-Tiongkok
The escalating rivalry between the United States and Tiongkok in Southeast Asia threatens the principles of centrality and unity of ASEAN. Internal issues that blur and weaken these principles have become more complex with the emergence of the rivalry between the two major powers in the region. This research employs a qualitative methodology by conducting a document study and applying a constructivist perspective as well as the construction of the principles of centrality and unity as a framework to explain Indonesia's efforts in revitalizing these principles. This research is significant as it discusses how a principle enshrined in the official documents of a region shapes the identity of a country and regionalism, and how this principle must be maintained. The researcher finds that ASEAN member states are caught in the United States-Tiongkok rivalry, which has fatal consequences for the principles of centrality and unity. Therefore, Indonesia initiated an instrument to determine the stance in responding to the United States-Tiongkok rivalry and strengthen ASEAN’s role as the architect of the Southeast Asian order up to the Indo-Pacific, called the AOIP. Through Indonesia's chairmanship in ASEAN in 2023, Indonesia reaffirmed and encouraged ASEAN member states to make AOIP a central agenda in their visions and missions, ensuring that the existing principles are upheld.
