A Study On Students’ Ability In Comprehending Descriptive Text At The Second Year Of Smpn 42 Pekanbaru

This research was aimed to find out the students’ ability in comprehending descriptive text at the second year of SMPN 42 Pekanbaru. The population of this research was the Second Year Students of SMPN 42 Pekanbaru. The number of samples was 40 students selected by using cluster sampling technique. The research instrument was multiple choice questions consisting of 40 questions. The test was given by using eight components of reading comprehension of descriptive texts such as determining main idea, determining factual information, determining inference, determining reference, finding the meaning of vocabulary, identifying language feature, identifying generic structure, and identifying social function. The data were analyzed by classifying them into five levels of ability, such as very poor, poor, mediocre, good, and excellent. The result showed that the students’ ability in comprehending descriptive text at the second year of SMPN 42 Pekanbaru was at a mediocre level with a mean score was 60,12.
