An Analysis Of English Study Program Students’ Difficulties In Listening Section Of Toefl
Abstract: Since Indonesians' proficiency in English is quite low and English is considered as a foreign language, most universities and government agencies in Indonesia require English tests as an administrative requirement. To have high proficiency in English, most of the universities rely on standardized tests such as TOEFL to measure English language proficiency. Most of the students’ problems while taking TOEFL were in the listening section. To determine what the factors of difficulties faced by English students’ in dealing with the listening section of TOEFL. This research used a mix method involving 38 students of English students batch 2021, Universitas Riau. Data was collected from a set of questionnaires which were distributed online in the format of Google forms. In addition, interview was conducted with 7 students to strengthen the result of the research. The questionnaire was designed using Like Scale and interview was analysed using Miles and Huberman analysis. The findings of the research showed the factor of difficulties encountered by English study program students’ in the listening section of TOEFL is the factor of material problems; this is evidenced by the average obtained in the questionnaire results 3,713. Moreover, the difficulty of each factor is categorized high. In conclusion, the students of English Study Program faced difficulties in dealing with listening section of TOEFL.
