ABSTRACT
Methylamine can be made synthetically through the reaction between ammonia (NH3) and methanol (CH3OH). One of its main uses is as a raw material in the production of various chemical compounds such as pesticides, explosives, medicines and other organic chemicals. The establishment of the Methylamine factory aims to meet production needs for factories operating in the pharmaceutical, food and health industries. Apart from that, it is used as an effort to increase the country's foreign exchange. Methylamine with the Albemarle process with a capacity of 85,000 tons/year is produced by an amination reaction, namely reacting methanol and ammonia plus a silica alumina catalyst to form a mixture of mono-, di- and trimethylamine (MMA, DMA and TMA). The Albemarle process takes place at high temperature and pressure, namely 400 oC and 20 atm with three production stages, namely raw material preparation, product formation and product separation. One of the main equipment needed in a methylamine factory is a trimethylamine distillation column which is used for the product separation process. The factory economic analysis shows an ROI value of 21.50%, PBP of 4.65 years, IRR of 22.73%, and BEP in the 4th year. Based on the results of this economic analysis, it can be concluded that the Albemarle process methylamine factory is feasible to establish.
