Migrasi Masyarakat Minangkabau Asal Kabupaten Tanah Datar Ke Kota Pekanbaru

The Minangkabau custom is a matrilineal kinship system in which control of inheritance is held by women while the rights of men are quite small, which is an encouragement to migrate. In addition, Minangkabau migrants, especially those from Tanah Datar Regency who come to Pekanbaru as an encouragement to depict a place that can provide better socio-economic changes. The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons that encourage the migration of Minangkabau people from Tanah Datar Regency to Pekanbaru City and to determine the relationship between migrant communities and their place of origin. The location of the study was carried out at the Tanah Datar Family Association Secretariat Office in Pekanbaru City. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach using the snowball sampling technique on key/informants with data triangulation. determination using the snowball sampling technique with data triangulation. Data collection techniques use observation, interview and documentation methods. Based on the findings, there are several reasons why the Tanah Datar Minangkabau community migrated to Pekanbaru, namely: first because of the economy, the Tanah Datar Minangkabau community migrated or went abroad to improve the economy from before as well as a culture because Minangkabau is known as traders and migrants. Second because of education, migrating to improve and continue education to a higher and more decent level. Third because of the environment, the lack of welfare from their hometown so people choose to migrate to Pekanbaru which is not far from their hometown while improving their standard of living. This kinship relationship shows a balance between traditional ties and the need to develop in the diaspora. The kinship of Minang migrants with their families in their hometown remains close even though they live far away. The tradition of migration has become an important part of Minangkabau culture, but they are always reminded to stay connected with their families and hometown.
