ABSTRACT
Activated carbon is known as an adsorbent with a large surface area and micropore volume, which gives it a high adsorption capacity in various applications, particularly in the removal of heavy metals from solutions. However, activated carbon used as an adsorbent in the adsorption process will eventually reach saturation when its adsorption capacity has been fulfilled. This leads to a decrease in adsorption effectiveness, making it unable to optimally adsorb the adsorbate. Adsorbent regeneration is an alternative method used to restore the adsorption capacity of saturated adsorbents. During the regeneration process, the adsorbed pollutants are removed, allowing the activated carbon to be reused in subsequent adsorption cycles. In this study, adsorbent regeneration was carried out over three consecutive cycles. Chemical regeneration is one of the effective techniques because it can be performed quickly, offers high efficiency, and minimizes the loss of activated carbon during the regeneration process. This study aims to investigate the effect of stirring speed and time on the chemical regeneration of corn cob-based activated carbon adsorbents. The study was conducted using variations in stirring speed (175 and 125 rpm) and stirring time (2.5, 3, and 3.5 hours) to enhance the removal efficiency of iron (Fe) metal ions. The results showed that the optimum conditions for chemical regeneration of corn cob activated carbon were achieved at a stirring speed of 175 rpm and a stirring time of 3 hours, with post-regeneration adsorption efficiency ranging from 83.02% to 61.44%, and desorption efficiency ranging from 90.60% to 78.68%.
Keywords: Activated carbon, adsorption, regeneration, and Iron (Fe).
