Based on the group solidarity theory of Gamson, Markovsky, dan Lawler, this thesis is an exploration of the social change that occurs upon a people conducted through an empirical evaluation of group solidarity. This research will compare and contrast the Riau Malay People living in the multi-ethnic city of Pekanbaru with the Riau Malay People of outlying villages that are homogenous centers of Malay culture. An analysis of social change and change in identity of the Riau Malay People will be studied throughout this thesis.
Furthermore, research based on the multi-linear evolution theory of Leslie White and Julian Steward will be conducted. The multi-linear evolution theory focuses on the form, function, and order that can be empirically measured within the Riau Malay culture. This research will explore to what extent the form, function, and order of the Riau Malay People are influenced by modernization, globalization, and technological advancements. Finally, this thesis will use the theory of acculturation by John Wesley Powell to evaluate the Riau Malay People. The four-fold model of seperation, marginalization, assimilation, and integration found in the theory of acculturation will be used to evaluate the Riau Malay People in their interactions with people from other cultures. An examination of the unique identity, knowledge, ideas, and values of the Riau Malay People will be performed in the light of influences from neighboring cultures.
