ABSTRACT
Bengkalis island is the main island of Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province, where
the district capital is located and is the border between Indonesia and Malaysia.
Bengkalis islan. There is a reduction in shoreline(abrasion) in Bengkalis island
which can reach 38.03 meter/year and the addition of the
shoreline(sedimentation) which can reach 29.77 meter/year.The abrasion and
sedimentation process occurs as a result of a series of waves that rub against the
shore and carry sediment. Sediment transport can take the form suspended loads,
this is what causes the Bengkalis Strait become turbid, turbidity bad for the
ecosystem and contruction around the strait.It is necessary to study the effect of
significant wave height and bottom shear stress on turbidity and sediment
transport in Bengkalis strait.This study use the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler
(ADCP) to collect sediment tranports data,the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter
(ADV) to collect bottom shear stress data and Turbiditymeter to collect turbidity
data. The equipment will assembled and placed in the sama location at the bottom
of the strait for 2 months. The result of this study indicate that significant waves
and bottom shear stress have an effect on turbidity and sediment transport, there
was sedimentation at the study site, where sediment was transported from the
Bengkalis Island and accumulated in the strait, this indicates that there is
abrasion on the shoreline around the research site.
