ABSTRACT
Iron sand is one of Indonesia’s abundant natural resources, one of which is in Riau Province. Iron sand contains a lot of magnetic material such as magnetite, maghemite and hematite. The purpose of this research is to study the morphological and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles of natural sand from Logas Village, Kuantan Singingi Regency, Riau Province. The iron oxide and non-iron oxide content of the natural sand were separated using Iron Sand Separator (ISS) and Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnets. The product of this separation (NdFeB product) was processed using 2 steps ball milling method. The first step of ball milling process lasted for 120 hours using combination of milling balls with radius 0.5, 0.7 and 1.5 cm. The first step ball milling (BM I) product was divided into 5 equal parts and then doped with manganese powder with concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt. %, respectively. These BM I products was milled using ball milling for 20 hours. The products of second step ball milling called BM II product were then measured for their magnetic susceptibility (χm) which based on magnetic induction of solenoid (B0) and total magnetic induction of solenoid (BT) using Pasco Magnetic Probe PS-216. The result of calculation shows that magnetic susceptibility of samples increases from 9584 x 10-5 to 17521 x 10-5 with increasing of manganese substance from 0 to 20 wt. %. The magnetic properties of samples were determined using Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The results show that the magnetization saturation (Ms) and magnetization remanence (Mr) decrease as manganese doped concentration increases from 0 to 10 wt.%, The coercivity (Hc) and loop squareness (Mr/Ms) of the samples increase as manganese concentration increases. The size and size distribution of the nanoparticles were analyzed using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), the results shows that there is agglomeration after product doped with manganese powder. The result of this research shows that, with different concentrations of manganese doped, the morphological and magnetic properties of magnetic nanoparticles were affected.
