ABSTRACT
The Symbolic Meaning of the Fanika Era-Era Mbowo Tradition in the Traditional
Nias Ethnic Wedding Ceremony on Nias Island

Fanika era-era mbowo is tradition of the Nias ethnic community at weddings
where this tradition is to calculate the dowry, whose family tree and clan is cua
(grandfather), gawe (grandmother), talifusỡ cua (grandfather's brothers), talifusỡ
gawe ( grandmother's brothers), talifus ama (father's brother), talifus ina (mother's
brother), sibaya (uncle), ina sa'a (uncle's wife) and giving advice to the groom. The
way of carrying out this tradition uses coconut leaves as a calculation of both the dowry
and the family tree of the bride. The purpose of this study is to find out how the process
of implementing the tradition fanika era-era mbowo and how the symbolic meaning of
the tradition fanika era-era mbowo in the traditional Nias ethnic wedding ceremony
on Nias Island.
This study used qualitative research methods, the theory of symbolic
interaction. The object of this research is the tradition of Fanika era-era mbowo with
the subject of this study consisting of five people with details of traditional heads,
traditional leaders, brides and the community in Sisobahili Iraono Hura village with
interview data collection techniques, observations, and research documentation. To
get complete data, the researcher used extension of participation and triangulation.
Data analysis techniques using Miles and Huberman modes are: data collection, data
reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions.
The results of this research show that, the implementation of the tradition of
Fanika Era-Era Mbowo has several stages, namely mborota mbowo, ngaoto, and
mene-mene which have steps starting from calling the guest village head and
sipangkalan village head to the bride's uncle, then continued with the first discussion
is mborota mbowo then ngaoto and mene-mene. Done using coconut leaves which will
be cut based on the amount of each discussion that is passed. Tradition has meaning
contained in every symbol and interaction used by families who carry out the fanika
era-era mbowo . The main meaning of this tradition is a way to introduce any of the
bride's relatives to the groom's family. This is to remind the bride and groom where
they came from and where they were married. Who are their uncles and what clans are
their relatives. The mention of the dowry in it is only symbolic. If it can be followed
that's great, but it shouldn't and shouldn't be forced.
