The Lawik Ombun Art Community Dance Studio, Kuok Village, Kampar Regency is a form of channeling the talents of youth and women in Kuok Village and at the same time preserving cultural values. Sanggar Lawik Ombun Art Community has many achievements in the field of dance and is often invited to honorary events and weddings. The process of teaching this dance talent is through instructional communication with providing specific knowledge or information with a view to training students to change target behavior. In the process of communication between trainers and students, there is often a miscommunication or misperception or lack of understanding in the dance training process. So that this study aims to determine the instructional communication of trainers to students at the Lawik Ombun Art Community Dance Studio, as well as the process of communicating messages and verbal and non-verbal symbols as well as obstacles in the instructional communication process carried out by trainers and students.
This study uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Informants in this study were determined purposively, consisting of two core implementers and 2 students of the Ombun Art Community Lawik Dance Studio who had been selected with certain considerations. Data collection techniques in this study include observation, interviews, and documentation.
The results showed that the instructional communication process carried out by the dance coach to his students was content specification, initial behavior, strategy, organization, and feedback. Instructional communication messages conveyed in the form of informative messages (telling how to do dance moves well) and persuasive messages (communication processes that are persuasive in nature also invite students to conform to the coach's wishes without any coercion). During the training process, the trainers used verbal communication, namely oral communication that was dominantly using the regional language or Ocu language. While the nonverbal communication used is in the form of symbols, attitudes, facial expressions, eye contact, body movements and hand movements and intonation tones. Then there are three types of obstacles, namely at the source, namely from the communicator, such as the use of complicated language, barriers to the channel, namely damaged equipment and unsupportive weather and obstacles to the communicant, namely communication that is not focused and causes noise so that the training atmosphere becomes disturbed.
