ALL TOO WELL: THE SHORT FILM FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

Toxic relationship is currently still a hot issue in society, both abroad and Indonesia. Toxic relationship refers to a relationship that hurts the physical, emotional, or mental person in it. This issue is also widely raised in mass communication media, one of which is the short film named ‘All Too Well’ by Taylor Swift which was released on November 12, 2021. This short film tells the romance story of a couple who are far apart in age and have a toxic relationship message in it. This study aims to determine the position of dominant, negotiation, and opposition of the audiences to toxic relationship message in Taylor Swift’s short film All Too Well.
This study uses a descriptive qualitative methods and constructivism paradigms. Data were taken by interview, focus group discussion, observation, and documentation techniques with 9 people selected through purposive technique. The data analysis technique used is reception analysis by Stuart Hall and the stages of analysis are data collection, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data is checked by using triangulation technique.
The result showed that the 9 informants received Toxic Relationship messages in All Too Well: The Short Film differently. 3 informants received dominantly because they accept all the toxic relationship messages in the short film and agreed that the short film could open up audience’s view of toxic relationships. 5 informants received negotiationally where they agreed that there is toxic relationship messages in this short film but didn’t received some messages in certain situations. 1 informant received oppositionally where they reject that there are toxic relationship messages in the short film. The differences between informants’ receptions were influenced by several factors such as age, gender, experience, interests, habits, religion, and surrounding environment.
