SUMMARY
The shells of nypa (Nypa fruticans Wurmb.) used as an adsorbent because it had a 45.6% of cellulose, 23.5% of hemicellulose, and 19.4% of lignin. In this work, the adsorbent applied to adsorb of heavy metals ions. This study aims to determine the ability of activated carbon of nypa shells in absorbing lead (II) ions. Activated carbon of nypa shells made by carbonization at 500°C for 60 minutes and continued by physical activation of carbon using a microwave at 600 W power for 10 minutes. Activated carbon of nypa shells applied to adsorb lead (II) ion with many variations of dose adsorbent and contact time. Activated carbon from nypa shells before and after adsorption of lead (II) ion analyzed by SEM-EDS and FTIR instrument. The concentration of lead (II) ion before and after adsorption analyzed by ICP-OES instrument. Based on this study, the optimum dose of activated carbon of nypa shells used in absorbing lead (II) ions of 2.5 g and the optimum contact time occured at 90 minutes with an adsorption efficiency of 99.53%. It concluded that activated carbon of nypa shells have the potential to be an adsorbent in adsorbing lead (II) ions.
