Abstract
Indonesia has a variety of plants that are used by many people for various types of traditional medicine, one of which is making herbal medicine or Jamu. Herbal medicine (Jamu) is not only widely used for health but also beauty. In the development of the era, the existence of herbal medicine is increasingly being competed with types of traditional medicine, modern medicine, and the sophistication of science and technology. To anticipate this situation, the jamu peddler needs to create a strategy to maintain their herbal medicine business with social capital. The formulation of the problem in this research is regarding social capital that is formed among the jamu peddler in Tuah Madani sub-district, Pekanbaru City. The subjects in this study found that five of the jamu peddlers who have been selling for more than ten years, both those who sell carried and those who use vehicles, ethnic Javanese and residing in Tuah Madani sub-district. The technique of determining informant is by using a purposive sampling technique. The method used is a descriptive qualitative research method. The theory applied in this research is the theory of Robert Putnam which suggests that there are three elements in social capital, this is network, trust, and norm. The results of this research is that informants configured network, trust, and norm with a herbal seller in the traditional market, sales of packaged herbal products, fellow jamu peddler, consumer and other parties. The existence of a network makes it easier for the jamu peddler to facilitate their herbal medicine (jamu) business and then there is trust that formed the customer relationship that can help and give them much benefit and there is norm to directing behavior and preventing conflict in their herbal medicine business.
