Orientasi Nilai Budaya Suku Akit Dalam Pelestarian Hutan Mangrove (Studi Tentang Suku Akit Di Kelurahan Teluk Belitung Kecamatan Merbau Kabupaten Kepulauan Meranti
The Akit tribe has possessed a strong relationship with mangroves as a source of
livelihood for decades. This study aimed 1) to identify and describe the economic
activities of the Akit Tribe in utilizing mangroves as a source of livelihood, 2) to identify
and describe local wisdom in the form of oral and material traditions related to
mangroves, 3) to identify and describe Nature Conservation Practices, 4) and to describe
and analyze the cultural values orientation of the Akit Tribe in the mangrove forests
conservation. The method employed in this study was qualitative ethnographic. The study
results found that the Akit Tribe utilizes mangroves in their daily life, especially for
treatment, firewood, and food sources. In the context of utilizing mangroves with strong
relationships, local wisdom has been presented in the form of abstinence (pantang
larang) and beliefs, including the God of the Sea, the Waters of the Water, keteguran, and
the conservation of mangroves. With the condition of the mangrove forest starting to
decrease, the practice of conserving nature has emerged, especially those performed by
Akit youths by inviting children to plant mangroves and use vacant land as a place of
conservation. Analysis of cultural value orientation discovered that, in industrial
activities, they have a more transitional and progressive view; that is, they see progress
and a better life by utilizing the widest possible natural potential for economic purposes.
However, there are also practices performed to maintain harmony with nature. While in
nature conservation activities, their view is more towards transition, but all of them lead
to progressive goals for the future by creating many business opportunities from
mangroves. In traditional groups, the orientation is more conservative, which sees the
past as crucial and applies it today in certain rituals and traditional ceremonies such as
Semah Laut.
