ABSTRACT
Sumatran elephant is one the sub-species of the Asian elephant that still lives in Indonesia. This sub-species is classified as endangered according to the IUCN. Forest areas as habitat for elephants are currently changing their functions to become plantation areas, settlements, and roads, causing elephants and humans live in the same place. The impact, raised among them. One area where elephant conflicts often occur is Giam Siak Kecil. The purpose of this study was to collect information about the community profiles, knowledge, attitudes, behaviors and their economic impacts, the study also collect information about the distribution of Sumatran elephant behavior and their conflict intensities in sampling area. Data collection used the systematically interview in 5 x 5 km2 grid, each grid consisting of three respondents with the criteria of a minimum two years of residence in the area. Data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative. The results of this study showed that the Giam Siak Kecil community generally knows about elephants because the majority of the community has jobs as farmers and elephants are often in community plantation areas which results in conflict between the community and the elephants. The people of Giam Siak Kecil generally view elephants as dangerous animals and pests for plantations. Of the 67 people interviewed, 27 people had an economic impact and 40 people had no impact. The distribution of Sumatera elephants in Giam Siak Kecil covers 14 villages, and the intensity of elephant-human conflicts in 2022 will be 19 times. The people of Giam Siak Kecil generally intend to live side by side with elephants.
