The malam marinek tradition is one of the unique cultural heritage values or traditions that take place in the Mandailing Batak community in Pasir Tuntung village, Kotapinang district where in the malam marinek tradition there are symbolic aspects that are rich in meaning represented by physical, social objects. and speech. This study uses a qualitative method with a symbolic interaction approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observation and documentation.
The results of the study show that the meaning of symbolic situations in the marine night tradition consists of physical objects including inek, potpourri, mattresses, the book of al-barzanji and tambourines or loudspeakers, while the social object of the marine night tradition is verbal behavior in the form of interactions that occur between the parties involved in the the implementation of traditions in the form of reciting al-barzanji, reading marhaban, reading prayers, throwing or giving potpourri and standing movements during marhaban and giving potpourri. The meaning of the product of special interaction in the marine night tradition is the meaning of the marine night tradition both from the perspective of hatobangan, naposo nauli bulung and parents. Hatobangan interprets it as a form of giving a prayer so that the wedding and all the traditions and traditional events that are carried out will receive blessings and take place well and smoothly. Naposo nauli bulung interprets it as a symbol in informing or indicating that the person carrying out the marine night tradition will carry out a marriage. Parents are a form of sign from the prospective bride and groom to all parties, both to the community, family and friends that the marriage will be carried out for the couple or carried out the maritime night tradition. The meaning of the interpretation of the marine night tradition is in the form of closed actions and open actions. Closed action includes internal motivation and external motivation from the parties who attend the implementation of the tradition, as well as feelings of being touched when the tradition is given. The open action includes facial expressions from the parties who receive the tradition who have touched looks and faces which are the embodiment of pleasure and seriousness in carrying out and preserving the culture of the marine night tradition in the traditional wedding ceremony.
