ABSTRACT
Phthalic anhydride is a synthetic organic compound that can be obtained from the oxidation process of orthoxylene and air. Phthalic anhydride is used as a raw material for making DOP (dioctyl phthalate) which is widely used as a softener or plasticizer used in the manufacture of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), synthetic leather, and so on. Phthalic anhydride is also useful in the manufacture of UPR (Unsaturated Polyester Resin) and alkyd resins. Because phthalic anhydride has a wide range of uses and is widely used in the production of plasticizers, domestic availability of phthalic anhydride cannot meet industry demand. Thus, the import value of phthalic anhydride is still quite high. The purpose of the Oxylene Oxidation Reactor (R-101) is to react xylene with air to form phthalic anhydride products. The reactor used is a multitubular fixed bed type with a catalyst in the form of Vanadium Pentoxide (V2O5). The phthalic anhydride factory is planned to be established in the Gresik Industrial Estate (KIG), East Java, with a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year. The main tool design is an oxylene oxidation reactor with a height of 11 meters. The total capital investment (TCI) in the pre-designed phthalic anhydride plant is IDR 488.970.488.500. Based on the results of economic analysis, the phthalic anhydride plant is feasible to build with a BEP value of 37%, an ROI of 70,37%, an IRR of 22.75%, and a PBP of 1.14 years.
