ABSTRACT
Heat exchangers 411E104 and 411E237 are types of shell and tube heat exchangers. The shell part is filled with the cold medium, which is soft water, and the tube part is filled with the hot medium, which is black liquor. Soft water is a type of water with low levels of calcium and magnesium, while black liquor is the residual liquor after the cooking process. Soft water is purchased from the Water Treatment Plant department at a high price of US$0.046 per 1 m3, so the usage of soft water needs to be taken into account. The purpose of this study is to calculate and determine the required (theoretical) flow of soft water for heat exchangers 411E104 and 411E237 according to the parameters that need to be controlled, as well as to understand the mass balance of soft water usage. The methods employed in this study include literature review, field observation, data collection, discussions, data processing, and drawing conclusions and recommendations. The calculation of the theoretical flow of soft water is done using the energy balance equation. Based on the calculations conducted, the theoretical flow of soft water for heat exchangers 411E104 and 411E237 is determined to be 112.31 l/s and 123.65 l/s, respectively. The average mass balance analysis of soft water usage from February 1-11, 2023, indicates an excess production of 20,261.64 m3/day. The conclusion drawn from this study is that the average actual flow of soft water from February 1-11, 2023, is higher than the theoretical flow, and the mass balance of soft water is not balanced.
