ABSTRACT
Supercapacitors are energy storage devices that have high power density and high energy density. One of the main components in a supercapacitor cell is the electrode. In this study, carbon electrodes were made from weed root biomass by optimizing multiple chemical activations with various concentration variations to obtain high specific capacitance. The grass root biomass was synthesized through a pre-carbonization process at 200℃ for 2 hours to produce self-adhesive carbon powder, double chemical activation with the activating agents ZnCl2 (0.3 M) and NaCl (0.1 M, 0.3 M and 0.5 M) with sample codes AI-01, AI-03, dan AI-05. The combustion process was carried out in an integrated furnace, where the carbonization uses nitrogen gas at 800℃ with a flow rate of 1.5 L/minute and a heating rate of 3°C/minute for 2 hours 40 minutes and the physical activation process was carried out using a temperature of 900℃ flowed with carbon dioxide gas at a flow rate of 1 L/minute and a heating rate of 10°C/minute for 10 minutes. Characterization of the physical properties of carbon electrodes using Fourier Transform Infra-red shows a high level of carbon purity due to the presence of the C≡C functional group. Surface morphology analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy showed that AI-03 produced higher mesopores than AI-01 and AI-05. The results of the X-Ray Diffraction test obtain two gently sloping peaks indicating that the sample is amorphous, with a peak diffraction angle (2Ɵ) of 25° on the plane (002) and 44° on the plane (100), with the smallest Lc value belonging to AI-03 with value 8.035. Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis shows that AI samples have a very high carbon content with an average of 90.37%. The electrochemical properties of the AI-03 supercapacitor cell electrode using the Cyclic Voltammetry method have a specific capacitance value of 356.9 Fg-1. The results of this study provide a clear picture that optimizing the dual chemical activation process can improve the performance of supercapacitor cells derived from thatch roots (AI) at a low cost, simple, and relevant.
