Long Distance Marriage is defined as a relationship between a man and a married woman where they live separately and it is not possible to meet every day because of distance. This is commonly referred to by the abbreviation LDM in the community. LDM is lived by some people for several reasons such as work, school, or other things. Couples who undergo long-distance marriages will face different and even more complex problems compared to married couples who live together. Especially on communication problems between couples because they don't live in the same house. The purpose of this research is to find out how LDM families practice mutual trust, support, and openness in the family.
This study used qualitative research methods. The subjects in this study were six LDM pairs of Indonesian students in Korea who were determined by the snowball technique. Data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques used are data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. In addition, the data validity checking technique uses source triangulation.
The results showed that the communication pattern of the LDM family in this study was divided into 3 things, namely: (1) Mutual Trust, (2) Supportive Attitude, and (3) Openness Attitude. Every family in this study applies an attitude of trust to be the basis of the strength of the relationship they are currently living. Mutual trust was applied by each informant in various ways including parenting and trust in a partner. The LDM family in this study also applies a supportive attitude as an attitude that supports the continuation of the LDM relationship they live in. This supportive attitude is shown by taking roles by each family member and building common goals within the family. In addition, the LDM families in this study apply an attitude of openness in their own way. The openness in question includes open communication regarding children, household affairs, difficulties experienced and conveying wishes/feelings to one another.
