Makna Simbolik Tradisi Sijagaron Dalam Upacara Adat Kematian Saur Matua Etnis Batak Toba Di Kecamatan Siantar Timur Kota Pematangsiantar
The Sijagaron tradition is one of the cultures of the Toba Batak ethnic community which is found in the traditional ceremony of the death of Saur Matua. The presence of the Sijagaron tradition is a sign that is specially pinned on someone who has achieved success during his lifetime. However, currently Sijagaron tradition in the city of Pematangsiantar, specifically in the East Siantar subdistrict, has experienced a shift, where its implementation is shortened and the manufacturing process is given to the craftsmen.The purpose of this research was to find out the meaning of symbolic situations, the meaning of social interaction products and the meaning of interpretation of the Sijagaron traditional tradition in the death ceremony of Saur Matua of the Toba Batak ethnic group in Siantar Timur, Pematangsiantar.
This research uses a qualitative method with a symbolic interaction approach. The informants in this study numbered seven people including three traditional figure, four traditional actors, namely two of them Hula-Hula, one person representing the family and one Sijagaron craftsman. data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and research documentation. In order to get the validity of the data, researchers use triangulation and increase persistence. Miles and Huberman's data analysis techniques include data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion.
The results of this research indicate that the symbolic situation in the Sijagaron tradition at the traditional ceremony for the death of Saur Matua in Siantar Timur sub-district consists of physical objects in the form of Bakul, Rice, Banyan, Lilies, Pimping, Alang-Alang, Hanjuang, Young Palm Leaves and Village Chicken Eggs as well as objects Social activities include holding Bakul, hand gestures to the use of Umpasa, the meaning of each symbol related to the philosophy of Hamoraon, Hasagapon and Hagabeon. The meaning of the product of social interaction includes the meaning of actors where Hula-Hula interpret this tradition as ideals and fulfillment of role values. Traditional leaders interpret it as cultural and prestige values, for family representatives it is interpreted as family values and social values and for craftsmen it is interpreted as economic values and social values. practical. The meaning of the interpretation of tradition that is present in the Sijagaron tradition includes Covert Role related to motivation, where the motivational part is divided into internal including the preservation of customs and respect while external motivation is driven by the results of deliberations. Overt Role include a form of enthusiasm and happy faces radiating from the actors involved.
