Nomophobia Pada Mahasiswa Di Fakultas Ilmu Sosial Dan Ilmu Politik Universitas Riau
This study aims to examine the phenomenon of nomophobia among students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Riau, and to analyze its causes and socio-economic impacts. nomophobia refers to the dependence on or excessive anxiety related to mobile phones and access to social media. This research utilizes Jean Baudrillard’s theory of hyperreality to analyze how the virtual world created by technology and social media replaces or blurs the boundary between reality and simulation for students. The study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach with a descriptive design, using purposive sampling for data collection. The findings indicate that the causes of nomophobia among students include internal factors (low self-control, sensation-seeking traits, and low self-esteem), situational factors (stress reduction, seeking entertainment or comfort, boredom alleviation, distraction, and combating loneliness), social factors (habitual quick responses, dependence on smartphone communication, media dependence, and fear of missing out on information), and external factors (advertisement influence, AI usage, and digital content). The social impacts identified include disruptions in face-to-face interactions and academic activities, while the economic impacts involve dependence on digital entertainment and high data quota expenditures.
