the effect of discovery learning method on the students’ ability in writing descriptive text at smpn 3 pekanbaru
Students in Indonesia, especially in the Pekanbaru area, one high school in Pekanbaru have problems writing descriptive texts. Based on my internship experience in teaching at the school under investigation in Pekanbaru, the problem is the lack of student interest in learning English, and the learning process does not take place efficiently, making it difficult for students to understand the learning material provided. This study aims to investigate the influence of the discovery learning method on students' descriptive writing skills. The design of this research is pre-experimental. Pre-experimental designs are useful when researcher are developing a new intervention, testing a new measurement instrument, or want to develop a more rigorous experimental design. Apart from this the research also adopted a quantitative approach. The reason of this is because the data was collected in numerical form. Based on the results of the data obtained from the components in writing descriptive text, the researcher concluded that the discovery learning method has an influence on students'' ability to write descriptive text. This is proven by a significant increase in student post-test results after the treatment. The results of this research also show that the Discovery Learning method can help improve students'' abilities in writing descriptive texts. Students tend to have difficulty writing in developing language and content rather than the topic to be written. The Discovery Learning method provides a clear and structured framework, where students can think first, discuss with friends, then write more confidently.
