Executive Summary Rancangan Pabrik Asam Asetat Dari Metanol Proses Cativa Dengan Desain Alat Utama Kolom Distilasi Asam Asetat (T-101)
ABSTRACT
The demand for acetic acid in Indonesia continues to rise in line with the growth of downstream industries, while domestic production capacity remains limited, making supply still dependent on imports. Import volume has grown at an average rate of 7.5% per year. This condition underlies the need for the establishment of a domestic acetic acid plant. The Bontang Industrial Estate, East Kalimantan, has been selected as the location for the construction of this acetic acid plant with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year. Acetic acid is an important intermediate chemical for various industries, particularly for the production of Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM), Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), and various acetate esters for the industrial sector.
The technology adopted in this plant is the Cativa Process, an iridium-catalyzed methanol carbonylation technology, chosen for its higher efficiency, good catalyst stability, and lower energy consumption compared to conventional processes. The main reactor operates at 170 °C and 15 atm, with a methanol conversion rate of 99%. The plant’s total electricity requirement is estimated at around 136 kW. Environmental aspects are also considered with the installation of a wastewater treatment facility prior to discharge to prevent pollution. The main equipment design includes the Acetic Acid Distillation Column (T-101), which operates at a pressure of 5 atm, with a height and diameter of 12.259 m and 1.524 m, respectively. The chosen distillation type is a sieve tray with 21 trays. Separation using a distillation column aims to purify the produced acetic acid.
Based on economic analysis, the feasibility evaluation shows positive results. Several key indicators such as Net Present Value (NPV), Return on Investment (ROI), Payback Period (PBP), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Break Even Point (BEP) were obtained at Rp2.098.714.139.294,52; 28,69%; 2,73 years; 29,56%; and 47,92%, respectively. The payback period (PBP) of less than four years indicates a relatively fast return on investment. The internal rate of return (IRR), which exceeds the average loan interest rate, further strengthens the conclusion that the acetic acid plant using the Cativa process is feasible and promising for realization.
