a study on students’ reading comprehension ability on narrative text at sman 5 pekanbaru

This research is about students' reading comprehension ability on narrative text at
SMAN 5 Pekanbaru. This research uses quantitative method that uses reading test as
instrument. The main purpose of this research is to know students' reading
comprehension ability on narrative text. The researcher used cluster random sampling
technique to determine the sample. The sample of this study was 45 students of SMAN
5 Peakanbaru. In the reading test instrument there are 35 questions. The time provided
is 45 minutes. The results showed that students had varied abilities in understanding
narrative text. Furthermore, it was found that 23 students scored excellent level or
about (55%), 12 students scored good level or about (29%), 4 students scored mediocre
level or about (10%), and 3 students scored poor level or about (7%). And the average
score of all students is 77.96 which shows the students' ability is at a good level. This
research suggests to students to improve their ability by reading more and practicing
questions on narrative text and students should also learn more about finding factual
information from narrative text, so that they can answer questions about factual
information correctly. And for teachers it is expected that teachers should give more
practice and improve students' ability in understanding reading text especially in
understanding factual information of narrative text. And also teachers should be more
creative in creating ways that can help students to improve their ability. Teachers
should also be able to make students enjoy their English class by creating interesting
ways and varied activities.
