Implementasi Keterlibatan Kamboja Di Belt And Road Initiative

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) becomes a grand economic instrument
for China. The BRI aims to strengthen the connectivity of those countries that
embracing it. The existence of the BRI influences the economic and political
sphere of Cambodia, as Cambodia itself embraces the BRI. This research aims to
apprehend the implementation of the BRI in Cambodia.
This research is written according to the qualitative research method. The
needed data are derived from books, journals, master theses and dissertations, and
news articles that contain the information concerning the BRI and the relationship
between China and Cambodia. This research assumes that welcoming the BRI
may be beneficial as the instrument to encourage more trade flow for the
participant countries. This research uses liberalism as its perspective. The BRI is
China’s economical instrument that influences the improvement of economical
integration toward its respective corridors.
The implementation of the BRI in Cambodia is greeted by the political
elites. The BRI accelerates the infrastructure development in Cambodia. Many
projects are under construction in Cambodia under the BRI framework. Those
projects, including railways constructions for 2230 km, expressways constructions,
construction of many economic regions, such as Sihanoukville Special Economic
Zone, and construction of many dams in Cambodia. However, the implementation
of the BRI in Cambodia also results in many problems. Those problems cover the
issue of patron – client relationship, environmental damage, and benefit of the
BRI projects for the indigenous people .
