Pemanfaatan Dan Pengolahan Kulit Batang Terap (Artocarpus Sp.) Dan Rumput Sianik (Carex Sp.) Untuk Bahan Serat Alami Alat Penangkapan Ikan
The use of the natural fibers in fishing gear has a positive role in the
development of environmentally friendly fishing gear because natural fibers are
easily decomposed and weathered, so that the remains of natural fiber left in the
waters doesn't have negative effect for aquatic ecosystems. This is in contrast to
the use of synthetic fibers. The use of natural fibers can reduce the risk of ghost
fishing that often occurs in waters. For example, a net that has been left at the
bottom of the water will cause fish to be entangled in the long time and can
damage the water ecosystem because its nature that is non-biodegradable and
undecomposed in the waters. Artocarpus stems and Carex grass can be used as
one of the natural fibers for environmentally friendly fishing gear materials.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the value of breaking strength,
elongation, absorption, sinking speed and weather resistance in Artocarpus stem
fiber and Carex grass and to used as materials in the construction of fishing gear
on purse seines, gill nets, long lines as head rope, ground rope, singker ropes,
float ropes. While the benefit of this research was to provide information about
the use Artocarpus stem fiber and Carex grass as natural fibers to replace
synthetic fibers in fishing gear materials.
The research was conducted at the Fishing Equipment Materials
Laboratory, Department of Water Resources Utilization, Faculty of Fisheries and
Marine Affairs, Riau University. Histological observations was conducted at the
Plant Ecophysiology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Riau University. The
breaking strength and elongation test was conducted at the Laboratory of
Engineering and Design of Wooden Buildings, Department of Forest Products,
Faculty of Forestry, Bogor Agricultural University. The aspects analyzed were the
breaking strength, elongation, absorption and sinking speed by the rope
numbering for the Artocarpus stem was 24x6x3 Z and the Carex grass rope was
48x12x3 Z with diameter of 6 mm and length of 25 cm.
The results showed that the breaking strength and rope elongation value of
Artocarpus stem were 2.84 kgf and 15.93 mm. The rope absorption value was
320.30% in fresh water and 282.62% in sea water. While the sinking speed value
was 5.78 cm/s in fresh water and 5.08 cm/s in sea water. The breaking strength
and rope elongation value of the Carex grass rope were 1.40 kgf and 8.86 mm.
The rope absorption was 287.67% in fresh water and 218.02% in sea water.
While the sinking speed was 2.97 cm/s in fresh water and 2.76 cm/s in sea water.
The Artocarpus stem rope had the higher value than the Carex grass rope in each
characteristic of determining the fishing gear material. Based on comparison with
the hemp rope, Artocarpus stem rope and Carex grass could be used as natural
fibers for fishing gear substitutes for natural fibers.
