Pengembangan E-Book Bioteknologi Untuk Meningkatkan Self Directed Learning Mahasiswa Pendidikan Biologi
Improving the quality of education is a central issue in developing
countries, including Indonesia. The progress of science and technology is a
challenge in the world of education to improve the quality, relevance and
effectiveness of education in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0. Higher
education which is one part of the national education system plays an important
role in producing better and contributive human resources (HR) for the progress
of the nation. Because the essence of education is not how it is a science that is
'feeded' by students, but how the education system encourages students to know
their interests and talents, and makes them interested and take the initiative to learn
on their own.Students are expected to be able to master scientific concepts, basic
pedagogical principles and the integration of information and communication
technology in learning. Studying in college is very dependent on the students
themselves.
The researcher conducted a survey by distributing a form consisting of 5
multiple choice questions related to the Self Directed Learning (SDL) indicator to
see the SDL ability of 49 Biology Education Students FKP UNRI (Appendix 1). The
survey results show that the SDL ability of students is still low in the aspect of
awareness and learning activities. Students have difficulty in identifying learning
needs and determining the best method for learning. Of the 49 respondents, only
18.4% had good awareness, and the average score for the overall SDL ability of
students was 42.5%, which was still relatively low.
Based on the results of the needs analysis above, it is necessary to improve
the quality of the student learning process, one of which is assisted by the
development of learning resources that can stimulate students' self-directed
learning abilities. Researchers formulate solutions to design innovations through
the development of learning resources, namely biotechnology e-books that are
integrated with SDL components/indicators, namely: awareness, learning
strategies, learning activities, evaluation, and interpersonal skills. The five
components are integrated through the my goals feature , interactive
exercises, mind maps , references in the form of links and barcodes , videos, images,
resumes, reflections, formative tests.
This research is Research and Development (R&D), this research
hasdeveloped a product in the form of a biotechnology e-book referring to the
ADDIE model which consists of analysis, design, development,
implementation, and evaluation. The analysis stage is an activity of analyzing
curriculum, learning materials, and student needs. Data analysis of student needs
xvi
was obtained through multiple choice test instruments as many as 5 SDL-based
questions distributed via google form to 49 students of Biology Education FKIP
UNRI. The Design Phase is an activity of designing learning scenarios, learning
instruments, and designing biotechnology e-books. The development stages of
conducting a biotechnology e-book quality test include: 1) validity testing. The data
was obtained through an assessment sheet on the biotechnology e-book which was
assessed by 4 validators including: material expert, pedagogic expert, and learning
media expert. 2) Practical test of biotechnology e-book. The data was obtained
through a closed questionnaire given to 21 Biology Education Students, FKIP
UNRI. The effectiveness test at the implementation stage was carried out by
applying the results of development on a large scale to students through field test
experiments in High School Biology Courses, the control class (not treated with the
use of biotechnology e-books) and the experimental class (treated with the use of
biotechnology e-books) with a model Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The
evaluation stage is carried out as a whole on the effectiveness of the biotechnology
e-book based on the results of the implementation through the multiple -choice posttest
instrument based on the SDL indicator as many as 20 questions on
biotechnology material.
The results of the research on the validity test by material expert validators,
pedagogic experts, and learning media experts show that the biotechnology e-book
that has been developed has a percentage value of 89.9% with a very valid
category. The results of the practical test showed that the biotechnology e-book that
had been developed got a percentage value of 90.4% in the very practical
category. The results of the study on the effectiveness test showed that the average
N-gain value for students' SDL abilities in the experimental class was 0.74 in the
high category, while the N-gain value in the control class was 0.24 in the low
category.
Based on these data, it can be concluded that: 1) the biotechnology e-book
developed is very valid from the material, pedagogical and media aspects, 2) the
biotechnology e-book developed is very practical for users in aspects of software,
learning design and visual communication, and 3) the developed biotechnology ebook
is effective in increasing the SDL ability of students in the experimental class
using biotechnology e-books compared to the SDL ability of students in the control
class without using biotechnology e-books.
