Penjernihan Minyak Jelantah Menggunakan Arang Dari Kulit Pisang Kepok
ABSTRACT
Used cooking oil is frying oil that contains carcinogenic compounds such as free fatty
acids, peroxides and others. To reduce the risk due to the impact of used cooking oil,
researchers are interested in recycling used cooking oil by carrying out a purification
process using kepok banana peel charcoal as an adsorbent. This study aims to determine
the effect of the size and mass of kepok banana peel charcoal on the characteristics of the
purified used cooking oil and to compare the characteristics of used cooking oil before
and after purification. The operating conditions of the study were the particle size of the
kepok banana peel charcoal which passed the 60 and 100 mesh sieves and the variation
in the mass of the adsorbent 5; 7,5 and 10 grams. Making kepok banana peel charcoal is
done through a process of dehydration, carbonization and activation using 5% HCl.
Furthermore, the purification process is carried out using the adsorption method with the
stages of the process namely despicing, neutralization, adsorption. From the research
conducted, it was found that the characteristics of the oil before purification were
packaged cooking oil (A0) with a clear yellow color, odorless, water content 0,06%, ALB
0,18% and peroxide value 7,6 mEqO2/Kg, for used cooking oil (B0) it had a reddish
brown color, rancid smell, water content 1,2%, ALB 0,65% and peroxide value 15,1
mEqO2/Kg. Meanwhile, in the oil after purification, the best results were obtained with a
mass operating condition of 10 grams and a particle size that passed a 100 mesh sieve
(D3) having a clear yellow color, no rancid odor, 0,09% water content, 0,28% ALB and
peroxide number 9,2 mEqO2/Kg.
